Summary
Four pelmets of blue/ivory/gold silk lampas. Jacquard woven, silk lampas, neo-classical design. Neptune and either Amphitrite or Amymonie a) dropped passementerie b) gimp braid a) cream cotton c) dressed interlining Hand sewn; lined and interlined throughout; three self fabric rolls as box pleats; edged with trim a) and b) at bottom edge; tacked to pelmet board at top. Jacquard woven(power/hand?);ivory and mid blue/faded to aqua silk warp;ivory and gold silk weft,heavier count;warp faced satin ground,unbalanced weft faced plain weave motifs;lampas brocade. Loom width 60.5cm. Red/white/red/white/red stripe. Straight drop repeat 159cm x loom width;2 motifs 1)Neptune 2)either Amphitrite or Amymonie(?) above their respective attributes/medallions amidst flowers and trees, garlands and beading. 18th cent neo-classical source. a) passementerie braid and drops 12cm. Blue,ivory,gold silk parchment loops, in gold and blue silk; centre striped; looped to braid. b) gimp braid 3cm ivory and blue silk. c) blue braid with flowerhead 2cm. d) self fabric piping e) buttons a) cream cotton satin weave b) interlining(?) c) dressed interlining(?) d) aquamarine plain weave silk. e) aqua-ivory plain weave 'Dupion'. Made in Lyon, France, in 1911.
Provenance
Lord Berwick (1877-1947), before his marriage in 1919, had the silk woven in Lyon, copying an earlier silk introduced by the 3rd Lord Berwick (1773-1842) between 1827-1842 also woven in Lyon. Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
