Summary
Portiere curtain of crimson/gold silk, edged on four sides. Crimson and gold brocatelle. Gold and crimson looped silk braid a) gold silk b) interlining baste fibre Completely hand sewn; edged on four sides, pinch pleated to 1.5 cm yellow tape heading band with nine brass rings. Woven 'shot' brocatelle; crimson silk warp; yellow silk weft of heavier count; warp faced satin ground; weft unbalanced plain weave motifs; loom width 530 mm (21 in) Repeat 380 mm x 180 mm. Renaissance source; 2 floral motifs; alternating horizontal; 3. And 2 and 2 halves across loom width. Gold and crimson brocaded looped silk braid 20 mm. a) gold silk plain weave (tabby) b) interlining,beige (?) baste fibre plain weave (tabby). Italian Renaissance source c.1600; 18th century Italian manufacture.
Provenance
Uncertain as to whether this was bought as a fabric or as a portiere by Lady Berwick (1890-1972). Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
