Summary
A silver-gilt fox's mask stirrup cup, engraved with the inscription 'Success to the Fox Hunting and all Friends Round the Wrekin' and the Hill crest. The Wrekin is a prominent hill close to the Attingham Park estate. Maker's mark for Thomas Powell, London, 1769. This is one of the earlier pieces in the Attingham silver collection and was owned by Noel, the First Lord Berwick (1745-1789). Much of his silver sadly was taken by robbers when it was transported to his town house in London, so this stirrup cup, assocaiated with country pursuits, is a lucky survival. It is possible that the stirrup cup is the one referred to in a bill as 'Bought of Thomas Jefferys, at Chenevix's Toy Shop, Opposite Suffolk Street, near Charing Cross, 1770 For ... Mostryn Esq. March 8 a near chase silver foxes head; gilt inside £5-0-0' (SRO: 112/6/42/9).
Provenance
Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.

Engraved with the Hill crest.
