Summary
One of eight silver-gilt cylindrical wine coasters, the sides pierced with a cast frieze of Bacchic putti, leopards and vines. Reeded rim with twisted ribbon decoration. Repeated leaf tip border to wooden base. Centre field engraved with the Berwick coat of arms. Stamped around the base: RUNDELL BRIDGE ET RUNDELL AURIFICES REGIS ET PRINCIPIS WALLIAE REGENTIS BRITANNIAS. Possibly designed by Thomas Stothard, R.A. Maker's mark for Paul Storr, London, 1818. A similar set of wine coasters marked by Paul Storr, 1814-1815, were supplied by Rundell's to the Lord Chamberlain's department for the Earl of Lonsdale and are engraved with the royal arms (private collection). In 1807 Paul Storr entered into a partnership agreement with the Royal Goldsmiths, Rundell, Bridge and Rundell and opened a workshop for them in Dean Street, Soho which he ran until 1819, mainly overseeing the work of other craftsmen.
Provenance
Presumed to be part of William Noel-Hill’s Ambassadorial service. William Noel-Hill, 3rd Baron Berwick (1773-1842) who had been in Italy as British Envoy and Ambassador to the Kingdom of Naples and the Two Sicilies. By descent bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
