Summary
A racing cup of Adamesque design, with vase shaped body, circular fluted cover with pineapple finial, pair of handles and raised on a circular foot. Decorated with husk garlands hung from bows and band of anthemion motifs with beaded border. Plantain leaves to base. Engraved in oval medallions surrounded by beaded borders: Oswestry Races 1778 the Gift of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn Bart / Hill crest. Made by Joseph Cresswell, London, circa 1778. Cresswell had made pieces to designs by Robert Adam for a dinner service for Sir Watkins Williams Wynn.
Provenance
Bought by the 8th Lord Berwick, Christies 11 March 1931, lot 126, being sold from Davenport by Mrs Leicester-Warren. Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
