Summary
Portrait miniature, watercolour on ivory, Judge William Noel (1695-1762) by Susan Hill (fl. mid 18th century), circa 1760. Judge William Noel, 1695-1762, son of Sir John Noel of Kirkby Mallory; eminent lawyer, MP for Stamford 1722-47, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Three-quarter length portrait, standing to right wearing a blue coat embroidered with gold, black robe and legal wig. Blue eyes, fresh complexion, smiling expression, aged about fifty. Crimson curtain left, brown wall background. Glazed in a deep giltwood frame with carved foliage and shells. Possibly painted by the sitter's daughter or granddaughter, both called Suzanna. Judge William Noel, 1695-1762, son of Sir John Noel of Kirkby Mallory; eminent lawyer, MP for Stamford 1722-47, Judge of the Court of Common Pleas. Horace Walpole thought him 'a pompous man of little solidity'. He married Elizabeth Trollope and was father to Mary, 2nd wife of Thomas Hill, therefore grandfather to 1st Lord Berwick.
