Summary
Oil painting (circular) on plaster, Dorinda returns the Dog to Silvio (after Zucchi) (from Giovanni Battista Guarini's Il Pastor Fido Act 2 sc. 3) (2), after François-Xavier Vispré (c.1730 - London 1790). A woman kneeling on a rock holding the neck of a hound, accompanied by two men. Previously catalogued as attributerd to Louis-André Delabrière, after Angelica Kauffman, circa 1785. A mythological subject, a young classical female figure in classical robes sits with her hound, two men either side. In landscape setting. Painted wall roundel, gilt border in laurel wreath.
Provenance
Believed to have been commissioned by Noel Hill (1745-1789), created 1st Baron Berwick in 1784; by descent bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
