Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Wentworth, 1st Earl of Strafford (1593 – 1641) after Sir Anthony Van Dyck (Antwerp 1599 - London 1641), 19th century. A three-quarter-length portrait, standing to the left, in armour, a baton in his right hand, his left on his sword hilt. cf.painting 'Thomas Wentworth,1st Earl of Strafford (1593-1641) with his Secretary Sir Philip Mainwaring (1589-1661)'. The presence of portraits of Strafford at Attingham Park is accounted for by the fact that his collateral descendant Anne Vernon married 1st Lord Berwick.

Probably 3rd Lord Berwick collection; 1847 Catalogue of Paintings p.5; 1861 Inventory p.210; 1913 Inventory p.85; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
