Summary
A large giltwood-framed pier glass, English, circa 1820. Standing behind a brass-inlaid rosewood and giltwood console table [NT 608160.1.1 and its marble top NT 608160.1.3]. One of a pair [the other NT 608160.2.2]. In the manner of Gillows of Lancaster. The rectangular plate in a moulded frame. The inner and outer borders carved with lotus leaves. The frame with rosettes at the corners and spaced anthemion and foliate sprays. Its lower frame formed from the base of the console table.
Provenance
Believed to have been made especially for the Drawing Room at Attingham under the instruction of the 2nd Lord Berwick, having survived the sale of 1827 (pp. 80 - 81, Lots 102 - 105). Listed in the Inventory taken at Attingham Park in 1861 (p. 90), in the Probate Valuation taken there in 1947 as an 'heirloom' (p. 8), and in the Inventory taken circa 1953 (p. 29, no. 8). Probably 2nd Lord Berwick collection: Thomas Noel Hill, 2nd Baron Berwick (1770 – 1832). By descent bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and partial contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877 - 1947) and transferred to the National Trust on 15th May 1953.
