Summary
A set of four mahogany plate boxes, English, late 18th/early 19th century, made by Gray, Goldsmith and Jeweller of 13 New Bond Street, London. -- A trade card/bill-head identical to the labels in these boxes exists and is dated 1792. The first time Robert & William Gray are listed in a London directory at 13 New Bond Street was in 1784. From 1802, William Gray is listed there alone.
Provenance
3rd Lord Berwick collection: William Noel-Hill, 3rd Baron Berwick (1773 - 1842). By descent bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and partial contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) and transferred to the National Trust on 15th May 1953.
