Summary

Print, mezzotint engraving, The Bedford Children: 'St George and the Dragon' (after Sir Joshua Reynolds) by Valentine Green ARA (Salford 1739 – London 1813). Francis Russell, 5th Duke of Bedford (1765 – 1802) as St George, John Russell, later 6th Duke of Bedford (1766-1839) as an attendant, Lord William Russell (1767-1840) crouching in the corner and Caroline Vernon, Mrs Robert Percy Smith (b.1762) as the Princess.After an original painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds, circa 1776. Caroline Vernon was a daughter of Henry Vernon of Hilton Park, Stafford, and sister of Anne, wife of the 1st Lord Berwick. Henry Vernon, who married Lady Henrietta Wentworth (daughter of the 1st Earl of Strafford), had three sons and five daughters, the eldest of whom became Lady Berwick, and the second, Henrietta, wife of Richard, Earl Grosvenor. The three others were Lucy, Jane and Caroline, the latter being depicted in this engraving.

Provenance

Attingham collection; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
