Summary
An oak press cupboard, English, late 18th century, the shaped cornice above three shaped panels, the outer two being doors with blackened-bronze decorative hinges (later), these doors above a band of four incised squares, the lower section with small ledge above four-over-three oak-lined drawers, with blackened-brass swan-neck handles with pierced backplates (later), with shaped apron and rectangular-section legs, the sides formed of projecting rectangular panels, the paneled interior of the upper cupboard with later brass clothes rail across the width, the upper backboards applied with two horizontal wooden plank, the upper plank with nine wooden pegs inserted, the lower plank with eight peg spaces but only four pegs in place, a peg hole either side of the brass clothes rail but only one peg in place. Thought to have belonged to Edward and Doris Hollamby who resided at Red House from 1952 and were the last owners of the house before it was purchased by the National Trust in 2003.
Provenance
The National Trust purchased Red House in 2003 to ensure its permanent preservation. The press cupboard was acquired with the house as part of this purchase.
