Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Holy Family with Saint John, Italian (Emilian) School, circa 1600. Four figures, Saint John as a child, turned to the right wearing a pink cloak and white undergarment worn on his left shoulder, holding with his right hand a crucifix with a long upright; gilt transparent nimbus, the Virgin, centre, is seated, turned to the right, head inclined, pale brown hair, white cap, wearing a pink dress with white scarf around her neck, she holds the naked Christ Child on her lap is on her lap on a white cloth; gilt transparent nimbus; the Christ Child, centre, is seated to the right, but is looking down at Saint John and is clasping the cross being offered him, Joseph is on the right, turned to the left, bearded, both hands resting on top of a staff, dressed in pink and cream robe, gilt transparent nimbus. Vague outline of brick building in background on left, sky on right. The infant cousins meet for the first time when they are both in Egypt.
