Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Constance Louisa Ponsonby-Fane, Mrs William Robert Phelips (1856-1930) by Leon Sprinck (fl.1915-1919), signed and dated 1915. A portrait of a mature woman, half-length, seated, turned to right, head inclined to right and gazing at spectator her right arm resting on the arm-rest. Her grey hair is swept up at the sides with a centre parting. She wears a brown silk dress with an embroidered gauze shawl lined with pink silk. She has a watch or cameo on her right wrist, a small black necklet-ribbon fastened at the front with a jewel and a thin long gold chain with a crucifix and long dangling earrings. Coat of arms in top right corner. Companion portrait to NT 597937.

Provenance

On loan from the Phelips family since 1931; purchased with the aid of the National Heritage Memorial Fund and the V&A Museums and Galleries Commission Purchase Grant Fund in 1989.
