Summary
Sampler, dated 1695. Margaret Jennings. Linen embroidered with coloured silks and linen thread using satin, cross, long-armed cross, double-running detached buttonhole, rococo and Algerian eye stitches with cut work and pulled work. Coloured and whitework band sampler. Except for the order of some of the borders and the verse, this sampler is identical to Sampler No. 50 and was almost certainly copied from it by Margaret, whom we might assume to have been Alice Jennings' younger sister. Inscription -'Love thou the Lord and he will be a tender Father unto thee. Favour deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman that feareth the Lord, shee shall be praised give her of thee fruit of her hands and let her own .... Margaret Jennings 1695'. The latter verse is Proverbs 31, v. 30, 31 and would have ended '. . . works praise her in the gates', had the worker not run out of space. Sides hemmed, top and bottom edges obscured by mount.
Provenance
The collection of Dr Douglas Goodhart.
