Summary
Sampler, undated, mid seventeenth century. Linen embroidered with coloured silks, silver and silver-gilt threads using double-running, four-sided, and plaited braid stitches. A band sampler containing strongly Italianate border patterns; three folded, the most striking of which contains a seated angel next to a stylized plant. A similar sampler in the V and A (516- 1877) bears patterns identical to bands 1, 2, 4 and 5 (counting from the top) on this example. A further sampler with bands the same as the top four, but in different order, is illustrated in Huish fig. 5. Sides hemmed, top and bottom edges not visible. Photo copyright NTPL/Richard Pike
