Summary
Sampler, undated, first half of the seventeenth century. Linen embroidered with coloured silks and linen thread using double-running, long-armed cross, detached buttonhole and chain stitches with buttonholed loops and french knots. A spot sampler, possibly continental, with geometric, interlocking and scrolling designs and stylized floral patterns. A pineapple motif. Initials 'RH' or 'BH'. Several areas of the linen were formerly worked with designs in black which has rotted leaving only holes. Selvedge top and bottom. Photo copyright NTPL/Richard Pike
