Summary
A joined oak chest with a drawer, English, probably Somerset, second half of 17th century. The hinged lid enclosing a lidded compartment above a frieze carved with a repeating S scroll motif and with a three panelled front carved with a double heart motif, the drawer below with lunette carving, raised on stile feet. The double heart motif is a design commonly found on 17th century West Country furniture, particularly Somerset. Victor Chinnery illustrates and discusses various examples in 'Oak, The British Tradition'.
