Summary
A turned ash armchair, probably English or possibly Welsh, first half of 17th century. With ring turned spindles and a solid seat raised on three heavy turned legs. Some losses.

A more sophisticated but none the less comparable example is illustrated in Chinnery 'Oak The British Tradition' fig.2.78 which is virtually identical to chairs at Wells Cathedral, the turnings and construction are very similar to the Montacute example. (James Weedon, April 2019)
Provenance
Bequest to the National Trust of tapestries, pictures, furniture and objects d'art from Sir Malcolm Stewart in 1960.
