Marks and inscriptions
J H Steer 1 Ridgmont St Tottenham Court Rd. London WC1. Inscription on back; Edward Green, eldest son of Edward Green of 153 Westgate , Wakefield, was born at that address on March 4th, 1831, and lived there until 1849. From 1849-1858 he lived at a house in Manygates Lane, Sandal (then called Cock and Bottle Lane). After his marriage on September 8th 1858 he went to live at the Vicarage, Greenheyes, Manchester where he resided until 1863, and from 1863 to 1888 he lived at Heath Old Hall, Wakefield, when he took Nunthorpe Hall, York. Married Mary Lycett, daughter of W E Lycett of Bowdon on September 8th 1858 at Bowdon Church, Cheshire and has issue Edward Lycett born 25 May 1860. Francis William born 25 November 1861. He was elected MP for Wakefield in 1874, but was unseated on petition in the same year. He was afterwards elected MP at an extraordinary Election in June 1885, owing to the death of Mr Bownas Mackie, and again at the General Election in November 1885 and July 1886, thus winning three elections practically in one year. He was a Member of Parliament until 1892 when he retired in favour of Colonel Hawk Charlesworth. Created a Baronet 5th March 1886. Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant West Riding of Yorkshire and West Norfolk. Lieutenant 1st West Yorkshire Yeomanry. Sir Edward purchased Ken Hill, Norfolk in 1876. Lady Green died there on November 7th 1902. Sir Edward lived from 1902 to 1923 at Treasurers House, York dying there March 30th 1923. Treasurers House was purchased and restored in 1897 by Sir Edwards second son Francis William Green. In 1926 four generations of Sir Edwardss family had been in business in Wakefield as Engineers and Iron Founders. They were descended in a direct line from Joseph Green, died April 1692, of Tong, Bradford: Yeoman.(inscription on back)
