Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Earnshaw, (wife of Joseph Green), early 20th century copy after British (English) School original said to be dated 1739. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated. Inscription on lower edge of frame reads 'Mary Earnshaw, who married in 1720 John Green of Wakefield'. Framed by Arthur Field (late Field Bros) Temple Bar; canvas stamped 'prepared by O and G Roberson and Co. Ltd, 99 Long Acre, London.
Full description
Although the inscription states Mary married John Green, this is probably a mistranscription for Joseph Green who married Mary Earnshaw 28th April 1720.
Provenance
One of a pair of portraits (see also NT 593158) said to have been discovered by Frank Green's nephew, Peter Green, and copied. Hung in the Dining Room 1933-51, in store 1951-91, Court Room to date. Gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954), 1933 (after original gift of Treasurer's House in 1930)
