Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Thomas Green (1753-1810) (after Henry William Pickersgill) by James Robert Granville Exley (Great Horton, Bradford 1878 – Grassington 1967), 1930. A half-length portrait of a young man, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, curly blond hair brushed forward, wearing a black coat, and black stock.

Full description

Thomas Green (1753-1805/6) was the great-grandfather of Frank Green of Treasurer's House. Thomas traded as a butcher in Wakefield, but also built up a portfolio of land and property. His fourth and youngest son (from his second marriage) was Edward Green (1799-1865), engineer and inventor of the 'Green's Economiser'. This work appears to show Thomas as a young man and he would have been almost 30 when Henry Pickersgill (the artist said to have painted the original portrait) was born. This suggests that the original must have been either not by Pickersgill or was a retrospective portrait (perhaps created at the same time as the original for NT 593151), perhaps based upon an older likeness.

Provenance

The original of this work is believed to have been one of a set of family portraits apparently discovered and bought by Frank Green's nephew from a relative. This copy was created by J.RG.Exley (see also NT 593151) and NT 593148) for Treasurer's House around the time it was gifted to the National Trust. Hung in Dining Room 1930-date. Part of gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) in 1930.Dining room 1930-date; gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) after 1930
