Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Edward Green (1799-1865) (after Henry William Pickersgill) by James Robert Granville Exley (Great Horton, Bradford 1878 – Grassington 1967), 1929. A half-length portrait of a man facing, his head turned slightly to the right gazing to the right, brown hair brushed forward, wearing a black coat with gold buttons white shirt and white stock. Edward Green 1799-1865 the founder of the firm, was known as Old Neddy. He was the father of the first Baronet Edward Green (1831-1923).

Provenance

The original of this work is believed to have been one of a set of family portraits apparently discovered and bought by Frank Green's nephew from a relative. This copy was created by J.RG.Exley (see also NT 593152) and NT 593148) for Treasurer's House around the time it was gifted to the National Trust. Hung in Dining Room 1930-date. Part of gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) in 1930.
