Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Mary Ann Ironside, (1796-1866), wife of Edward Green (1799-1865) by Henry William Pickersgill, RA (London 1782 – London 1875). A half-length portrait of a young woman, sitting, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white dress, in the background, large red drape to the right, in front of a stone column, and a distant landscape view with cloudy sky on the left.
Full description
Mary Ironside was the daughter of a family of prominent Wakefeld engineers. She married Edward Green in 1821 (see NT 593151) and went on to have twelve children with him; only four survived to adulthood. One of these, Edward (1831-1923), was the father of Frank Green of Treasurer's House.
Provenance
This work is believed to have been one of a set of family portarits discovered and bought by Frank Green's nephew from a relative. Others now at Treasurer's House were copied by J.RG.Exley (see NT 593151 & 593152) but this is thought to be an original. Hung in the Dining Room 1930-date; gift of Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) in 1930.
