Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of West Front of Treasurer's House, British (English) School.
Full description
This view shows Treasurers's House as appears in an 1811 engraving by J.Gieg based upon a drawing by G.Shepperd published in 'The Beauties of England and Wales' and entitled 'Manor House, Yorkshire, The Seat of Lord Rokeby' N.B. Lord Rokeby did not own Treasurer's House and this appears to be a confused reference to Rokeby Park which had been bought in 1769 by the Morritt family who also owned part of Treasurer's House from 1725 until 1813. It seems most likely that this painting is copy of the engraving with some small differences, though it may an older work.
Provenance
Shown in a 1902 photograph of the dining room without its present frame; part of the gift to the National Trust of the house and contents by Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954) in 1930.
