Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Francis 'Frank' William Green (1861-1954) by James Robert Granville Exley (Great Horton, Bradford 1878 – Grassington 1967). 1935. Half-length portrait of a man, turned slightly to the left, gazing to the left, seated at a desk, holding a pen/pencil in his right hand, and the other resting on a blotter on which is a sheet of writing paper, he is wearing a black suit, black bow tie and white shirt. an open ceramic ink-stand is on the desk at the far right. A photograph of this painting exists under THY/D/201, as do numerous others. Possibly a 'photogravure' copy?
Full description
The artist was born at Great Horton, Bradford, Yorkshire and worked at the Cambridge School of Art and Hull Municipal Art School before moving to London to become a full time artist in the 1920s, where he specialised in landscape and natural history subjects as well as portraits. He later returned to Yorkshire and lived at Grassington.
Provenance
The 1930 inventory for Treasurer's House lists a work with this description (apparently a study for a larger formal portrait) but with slightly smaller dimensions. The 1935 date on the reverse suggests that this is not that work, but a slightly later copy; perhaps swopped at the request of the donor (and subject) Francis 'Frank' William Green FSA (1861-1954)?
