Summary
Bronze on rectangular, ebonised base with gilt bronze mounts of faun masks, Milo of Croton, after Etienne-Maurice Falconet (Paris 1716 – Paris 1791). A bronze group of a man wrestling with a lion, after 1754 marble sculpture by Étienne Maurice Falconet, now in the Louvre. Milo was a 6th century BC wrestler from the Magna Grecian city of Croton in southern Italy who enjoyed a brilliant wrestling career and won many victories in the most important athletic festivals of ancient Greece.
