Summary
An inlaid walnut upholstered armchair or small sofa, English, circa 1730. Upholstered in a contemporary needlework, with scrolled arms and a cushion seat with moulded edge and raised on scroll work inlaid cabriole legs and pad feet.
Full description
A good example of mid 18th century seat furniture, it would appear that the needlework is the original upholstery. The inlay to the legs is both unusual and well executed and there is very little sign of repair or restoration. (James Weedon, November 2019) Illustrated (fig.202,p217) in Percy McQuoid's ' The age of Walnut' and (p447) R Edwards' Dictionary of English Furniture'. Discussed and illustrated (fig.12) in Country Life 5 August 1922 (p148-9).
Provenance
Given by Frank Green (1861-1954) along with house, garden and contents to the National Trust in 1930. According to 1938 provenance notes (supplied by Frank Green at the request of the National Trust) this 'love seat' was bought from Charles Duveen by Frank Green c.1905. It was then covered in horsehair or baize which was removed to reveal the original needlework.
