Summary
A two-handled silver tea urn with tap with ivory handle, bead and engraved borders on a square base with ball feet, with engraved crest and design of a kneeling enslaved man with the motto 'Am I not a man and a brother' after Thomas Bewick and presented to Zachary Macaulay (1768-1838), March 5 1812. Altered to match tray WAL/S/4 and presented at the same time-March 5, 1812. Only the lid and base are marked.

Lid of urn: Am I not a man and a brother Side of urn: African Institution March 25th 1812 Resolved unanimously that Zachary Macaulay, Esq., Having with the most ardent zeal and assiduous attention gratuitously devoted to the concerns of the Institution his eminent talents, Experience and local knowledge has thereby Established his claim to the lasting gratitude Of all who are interested in the civilization And happiness of Africa And this Society respectfully request his acceptance of a permanent though most inadequate acknowledgement of the advantages it has derived from his valuable Services in consequence of which this Equipage was presented
