Summary
Oil painting on panel, Ann Danby, Lady Calverley (b. 1534),aged 37, British (English) School, 1571. Inscribed: ANNO DOMINI;1571./AETATIS SVE,.37. A three-quarter-length portrait, facing, in black surcoat over gold ornamented dress; arms top right. The label on the frame designates the sitter as 'wife of Sir W. Calverley, daughter of Sir Christopher Farneley'. An old label on the back describes her as Ann, daughter of Sir Christopher Danby of Farneley, wife of Walter Calverley and 'mother too that William Calverley who was pressed in the year 1573'. This is incorrect, for the murder of the family was done by Walter Calverley, son of William, in 1605. It is presumably her son William who is the subject of WAL/P/54.
