Summary
A mahogany, brass and cast iron adjustable reading stand, English, circa 1890. With oval enamel label 'JOHN CARTER, MAKER, LITERARY MACHINE, 6A NEW CAVENDISH ST, PORTLAND PLACE, LONDON. W., the brass pole on a cast iron base with four splayed legs, each with acanthus detail and terminating in claw and ball feet.
Full description
John Carter's Literary Machine (patented) was described in an advertisement thus: ''For holding a book or writing desk, lamp, &c, in any position, over an easy chair, bed or sofa, obviating the fatigue and inconvenience of incessant stooping while reading or writing. Invaluable to invalids and students. Admirably adapted for India. A most useful gift. Prices from £1-1s.'' From circa 1880 at his premises in New Cavendish Street, Carter sold all manner of invalid carriages, bath chairs and carrying chairs, as well as adjustable couches and Literary machines.
