Summary
Teabowl, porcelain, polychrome decorated in the "Oriental Lowestoft" style with flowers in famille rose enamels, China, JIngdezhen, c. 1780-90. Lucknow label. Those pieces marked ‘Lucknow/1859,’ were probably acquired in Lucknow, India, the capital of the province of Oudh, ruled by the Nawab of Oudh, and elevated to the status of the King of Oudh in 1819. When the regime under the King of Oudh became corrupt, the British annexed the province, forcing an Indian uprising, which resulted in the Siege of Lucknow in 1857. The aftermath included wholesale looting and vandalism on the part of British troops, and some objects returned to England as ‘spoils of war.’ Sir Charles Edward Trevelyan (1809-86) was the Governor in Madras from 1859 to 1860.
