Summary
Teabowl and saucer, porcelain, made in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi province, China, 1740-1750; decorated in opaque polychrome (famille rose) enamels and gold, painted in a European Baroque style with a naturalistic iris within a scrolled red cartouche with formal scrolling foliage and stylised flowers in a dense design on a blue-turquoise ground, the rim with red bellflowers suspended from demi-florettes.
Full description
The decoration of this cup and saucer reflect the taste of the Emperor Qianlong and shows foreign influences in the iris and baroque scrollwork. Compare the design with an imperial vase with his reign mark in the Victoria and Albert Museum, C.1461-1910.
