Summary

Plaster sculpture, Bacchus visiting the house of Icarus (after engraving by Bernard de Montfaucon after Pietro Santi Bartoli) by Benjamin Carter (Datchet 1719 - Datchet 1766), circa 1761. The fourth of eight bas relief panels by Benjamin Carter c. 1761, representing Bacchus visiting the house of Icarus. Subject matter taken from French engraving by Montfaucon published in 1719 (which are themselves taken from the etchings by Pietro Santo Bartoli of the 1600s). Had been painted terracotta but were returned to natural colour when the Pantheon was restored in the 1908s.
