Summary
Lead sculpture, Apollino (Little Apollo) by John Cheere (1709 – London 1787), 1765/66. Lead statue of Apollino, after the antique, supplied by John Cheere. Antique statue originally at Villa Medici, Rome (recorded by Maffei in 1704 but probably one of the statues from which casts were made by the French Academy in 1684) and since 1769-70 in the Uffizi Gallery, Florence (although removed to Palermo to escape the French between 1880-3). This cast most likely made by Cheere in 1765-66, from Matthew Brettingham junior's moulds, for the Temple of Apollo. Removed to the West Garden 1903-4.
