Summary
Painted white lead sculpture, River God, by John Cheere (1709 – London 1787). Lead statue figure of a River God, painted white. Henry Hoare's ledger shows payment to Cheere in August 7 1751 (WRO 383.4) £98. Modelled very closely, but in reverse, on the God of the Tiber in Salvator Rosa's etching of The Dream of Aeneas (Bartsch 23). Modelling so fine it could be attributed to Rysbrack (Woodbridge, 1974). Literature; J Davis, Antique Garden Ornmane, Woodbridge, 1991, p50, Pl.15
