Summary
Oil painting on panel, Apollo in his Chariot with the Hours and Aurora, attributed to William Hoare of Bath, RA (Eye 1707 – Bath 1792), circa 1765. A curved bench seat from the Temple of Apollo, Stourhead, painted brown with a large scallop shell and oak leaf carving to top of the back, painted with a classical scene. Apollo in his chariot and the Hours, the bottom edge of the seat has c-scroll carving and the six legs are carved with acanthus leaves and flower bosses. Paint loss near Apollo's face.
Provenance
Commissioned by Henry Hoare II (1705 - 1785) for the Temple of Apollo, Stourhead (a payment made to artist on 9 May 1765); given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
