Summary

A mahogany-framed 'Gainsborough' armchair, English, circa 1770. The rectangular back, armrests and seat upholstered in Bargello flame-stitch needlework, the open arms raised on channelled inswept supports with central line and dot carved channel, the wide seat standing on square chamfered legs with carved decoration matching the arm.

Full description

The term 'Gainsborough' refers to a high-back armchair with wide seat and set-back open arms met mid-way by a curved support.
