Caption
This vivid oil portrait shows Pamela Muriel Ward aged about 31, whose collection of antiques, collectibles and personal effects is on display in the Llanerchaeron villa. Born in 1908 to a wealthy family, she spent most of her early life in India before setting up an antique shop in Knightsbridge, more as a hobby than a real business, and left her collection to the National Trust on her death in 1994. In the painting, she is prominently displaying her ringless left hand, possibly as a statement that independently wealthy young ladies had no need to marry if they did not so wish.
