Summary
An oak chest, West Country, circa 1640. The hinged lid above a deep frieze rail carved with foliate-filled lunettes and three plain panels flanked by stylised flowers, the outer uprights and lower rail carved with repeating 'S' motif, the stile feet joined by a scrolling apron, the interior with fitted till.
Full description
The attribution to the West Country is based upon the appearance of both the 'S' motif and the scroll-carved apron in chairs from Salisbury, as seen in Chinnery 'Oak Furniture, The British Tradition (1979 and 2015), p.452 and 453. The stylised stiff leaf detail is another common motif on West Country chests.
Provenance
Gift of Enid Shortridge in 1995.
