Summary
Maiolica dish, painted with a scene form Ovid's Metamorphoses, Zeus (Jove/Jupiter), a god-like figure, hurls lightening bolts at a seated figure, with a coiled serpent at his feet, Aesclapius. Inscription on the underside. Possibly the workshop of Guido Durantino, Ubrbino, Italy, c1540.
Marks and inscriptions
Reverse: 'L 'altitonate Giove Sdegnato contra Eusculapio co ardente fulmine l'ocide'. - Thundering from on high, Jove angry against Aesclapius throws lightning bolts to kill him.
