Summary
Wet drug jar, one of two (NT 540418), earthenware with tin-glaze (maiolica), of baluster shape fitted with a spout and handle, probably the workshop of Maestro Domenico, Venice, Italy, c.1575; painted with two bust portraits of Europeans, each in a circular reserve beneath the handle and spout, against a blue ground of polychrome scrolling fruit and flowers.
Full description
Most drug jars held powders, protected by a vellum cover tied with string, however, liquid preparations were stored in 'Wet jars', which have a spout and usually a handle at the back.
