Full description

Dish, soft paste porcelain, oval form with gently undulating rim and short foot, Caughley, Shropshire, c. 1779-99; the interior printed with the pattern known variously as 'Pleasure Boat', 'Fisherman' or 'Fisherman and Cormorant', smaller vignettes of the same pattern are on the exterior of the dish, the pattern at the interior rim is called the 'Bird's Eye Border'. Impressed mark 'SALOPIAN' on the underside of the base. The main decorative pattern is derived from a rare hand painted Chinese design of about 1765- 1775, known on both earthenware and porcelain (Halliday and Zeller, 2018, 29; Godden 2004, Plate 3). The pattern, with some variations, was also used at Worcester and, later, at Minton in Stoke-on-Trent. An impression from the original Caughley 'Fisherman and Cormorant' and 'Bird's Eye Border' engraved copper plates are in a bound volume of transfer prints held at the V&A Museum (E.1150-1925). Mark reference Godden, 810 References: Geoffrey Godden, Godden's Guide to English Blue and White Porcelain, (Suffolk: Antique Collectors' Club, 2004) Richard Halliday and Loren L. Zeller, Chinoiserie. Printed British Ceramics in the Chinese Style 1750- 1900 (Swansea: Gomer Press, 2018)
