Summary
A mercurial desk thermometer in the form of an inlaid marble obelisk on a rectangular stepped base that graduate in size. The base and the surround of the thermometer is inlaid with a colourful foliate design including blue and white flowers. The white flowers on the left side and blue on the right side. In two pieces with a rod to hold it together. Metal and glass thermometer set on a white inset panel, this is marked with numbers of 10-130 in increments of ten. Fahrenheit thermometer. The right side has four descriptions ‘Freezing’, ‘Temperate’, ‘Sumr Heat’ and ‘Blood Heat’. The base is covered with a yellow paper and a makers label ’47 Burlington Arcade, Picadilly West, Tomlinson Manufacturer of Derbyshire Marble Ornaments’.
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust by Sir Montgomerie Fairfax-Lucy (1896 – 1965), two years after the death of his father, Sir Henry Ramsay-Fairfax, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1944), with Charlecote Park and its chief contents, in 1946.
