Summary
Oil painting on canvas (oval), Mary Elizabeth Williams by Richard Buckner (Chichester 1812 – London 1883). An oval mid-length portrait of Mary Elizabeth Williams, she looks towards the spectator but is turned slightly to the right. She has long dark hair in ringlets. She is wearing an off-the-shoulder black dress with white trim and a shawl with red trim. An oval brooch sits at her bust, this has an oval ruby surrounded in diamonds with drop pearl detail below. Dark background. Inscribed on the reverse ‘Mary Lucy 1847 Buckner’. Framed in an oval decorated gilt wooden frame. Mary Elizabeth Williams (1803-1890) was the daughter of Sir John Williams and Lady Margaret Williams. Mary Elizabeth married George Hammond Lucy in 1823 when she was aged 20 years. They had eight children together. Mary Elizabeth and George Hammond were responsible for the addition and restructuring of Charlecote during the 19th Century.
