Summary
Oval oil painting on canvas, Mary Elizabeth Williams, Mrs George Hammond Lucy (1803 – 1890), by Orazio (Horace) Manara (Parma 1804 – after 1872) 1850. An oval head and shoulders portrait of Mary Elizabeth Lucy as a young lady, she is positioned slightly to the right with a direct gaze with the spectator. She has long dark curled hair and is wearing a crimson dress with white lace detail to the bust. Painted in 1850 when Manara was staying at Charlecote. In a carved oval giltwood frame. Mary Elizabeth was the daughter of Sir John Williams of Bodelwyddan. She married George Hammond Lucy in 1823 and alongside her husband made many alterations to the house. Mary Elizabeth was responsible for rebuilding the Charlecote church in 1853. She wrote many recollections of her life including the 'Biography of the Lucy Family' in 1862.
