Summary
Oval oil painting on canvas, Henry Spencer Lucy (1830-1890) by Orazio (Horace) Manara (Parma 1804 – after 1872). An oval half-length portrait of Henry Spencer Lucy, positioned to the right but facing the spectator. He is wearing a black coat, white collar and blue cravat. The canvas is signed and dated: ‘Manara p 1850’. Believed to have been painted by Manara when staying at Charlecote in 1850 Framed in an oval giltwood frame. Henry Spencer Lucy was the younger brother of William Fulke Lucy. Henry Spencer married Christina, daughter of Alexander Campbell of Monzie. He inherited the Charlecote Estate in 1847 and restored the brickwork and stonework of Charlecote Park.
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust by Sir Montgomerie Fairfax-Lucy (1896 – 1965), two years after the death of his father, Sir Henry Ramsay-Fairfax, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1944), with Charlecote Park and its chief contents, in 1946.
Marks and inscriptions
Canvas: Signed and dated 'Manara p 1850'. It is believed to be painted by Manara when staying at Charlecote in 1850.
