Full description
One of a pair of cannon barrelled breechloading flintlock pistols by William Turvey, London, c1760, with silver mounts. William Turvey Snr, gunmaker 1703 -1744; William Turvey Jnr, gunmaker after 1750 Round cannon form iron turn-off barrel formed with moulded rings, with a pronounced muzzle ring. Length 14.2cm. Calibre 16mm. Iron frame formed with integral breech and a long lower tang to hold the wood grip. The engraved frame encloses the box-lock flintlock action, the cock, pan and frizzen mounted to the side. The breech is signed within an engraved panel W. TURVEY, and the underside is stamped with proof marks of the London Gunmakers Company, together with the makers mark, WT under a fluer-de-lys. Engraved under the pan, LONDON. An engraved barrel tang is set into the wooden stock behind the breech. Curved and rounded wooden grip of figured walnut which swells slightly around the lower end. The barrel tang has a carved rococo shell apron and there are long tear-drop finials carved behind the lock frame. Engraved silver furniture comprising; butt cap formed with a pug or lion face and stamped with the mark JA, together with the London standard mark; a rococo escutcheon with shell and flowers and engraved with crest (a crown surmounted by a winged griffen); and a rococo sideplate incorporating a “stand of arms” design with flags, cannons and flowers. Engraved steel trigger guard, the central bow engraved with a flower. (Brian Godwin, 2010) Overall length: 32cm
