Full description
One of a pair of flintlock holster pistols by William Turvey, London, c1760 Round iron barrel formed in 3 stages each stage separated by a turned ring or moulding, and slightly swamped (flared) at the muzzle. The breech stamped with proof marks of the London Gunmakers Company and engraved along the top W. TURVEY, LONDON. Engraved barrel tang. Secured to the stock by 2 transverse pins. 1 brass tipped ramrod, present the other missing. Length 20cm. Calibre 15mm. Walnut fullstock with carved “shell” apron around the barrel tang and tear-drop finials behind the lock, the butt pommel of swollen form. Engraved brass furniture comprising; pommel cap with long side spurs and fixed with a single screw; oval-shaped escutcheon engraved with crest (winged griffin over a Crown), flat sideplate; trigger guard with bell-shaped finial and 1 balluster turned ramrod pipe. Scroll tipped trigger. Flintlock with rounded plate and cock, border line engraved overall and signed W.TURVEY. Retained to the stock by 2 sidenails. Overall length: 35.5cm
Provenance
Presented to the National Trust by Sir Montgomerie Fairfax-Lucy (1896 – 1965), two years after the death of his father, Sir Henry Ramsay-Fairfax, 3rd Bt (1870 – 1944), with Charlecote Park and its chief contents, in 1946.
