Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A View of Cambridge from the Observatory, 1835 by Richard Bankes Harraden (1778 - Cambridge 1862), dated 1835 on reverse. The Observatory, Cambridge, on the high ground on the extreme left; in the foreground a shepherd on the left, looking away to the right and his flock of sheep passing three gowned undergraduates, two seated, one standing, on the edge of a sheep pen consisting of a circular area surrounded by a hedge; two tall trees on the right, a distant.The Observatory, Madingley Road, with its Doric portico, was built in 1822-3.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
